Get help from the online community on which sites to trust

MetroChannel is based on the premise: Where there is smoke, there must be fire. In other words, if some site or blog is popular, it might be worth checking out. But should we enter a site in blind faith? The Online Shadow Economy is not in a mood to spare anyone. So it is a good idea to get help from the online community i.e other surfers who have visited and rated over 20 million websites so that we know which ones to avoid and which ones to trust.

Esa Suurio, who heads Web of Trust, calls it people-driven Internet security.

Final Thoughts

[…]

All in all, we consider Web of Trust, WOT, to be one of the most remarkable initiatives to make the Web a safer place, protect your family, and ultimately, yes, save your wallet from scams, frauds, and phishing. You will know which services are to be trusted way before taking out your bank cards. With WOT, you will experience piece of mind and relaxed surfing on the Web. Check it out; you’re going to be glad you did.

Therefore, we recommend using Web of Trust and actively participating in the WOT community, because every one of us can make a difference. The more ratings are centralized, the more accurate the statistics will become. And best of all, the add-on will neither slow down your browsing experience, nor prevent you from visiting not-so-safe websites (unless you’ve specifically set it up that way due to the need for family safety, for example).

Clearly, we need to install Web of Trust in our browser as soon as possible and preferably help out by rating sites we happen to visit, that have still not been rated yet.

WOT bookmarklet for Safari and Opera

http://www.mywot.com/en/blog/wot-bookmarklet-for-safari-and-opera

Safari and Opera don’t currently allow browser extensions in the same way as Firefox and Internet Explorer do, and therefore, providing WOT for these environments is not feasible. However, as a response to requests from our users, we have created a WOT bookmarklet that brings at least some of the functionality to the users of these two popular browsers.

If you are using Safari or Opera, you can add the WOT bookmarklet to your browser simply by dragging this link to your bookmarks.

Using the bookmarklet is simple: click the bookmark and it will display a WOT popup on the page, showing ratings for the current site. Another click will hide the popup. This gives you an easy access to WOT reputation data, although you won’t be able to give your own ratings.
